BOSTON — Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is not in Saturday’s starting lineup against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.
Pedroia suffered a right hand contusion in Friday’s 3-2, 10-inning win over the Rays. X-Rays performed Saturday came back negative, but Pedroia is scheduled to undergo an MRI, after which the Red Sox will have a clearer understanding of his status.
Red Sox manager John Farrell said before Saturday’s game he’s hopeful Pedroia will simply be day-to-day. It’s unclear whether the second baseman will be available to come off the bench in Saturday’s game. Jonathan Herrera will start in Pedroia’s place and bat ninth.
Pedroia suffered the injury while fielding a throw from catcher A.J. Pierzynski on Wil Myers’ stolen base in the second inning of Friday’s walk-off victory. He initially stayed in the game but exited after grounding out to third base to end the ninth inning.
UPDATE (7:55 p.m.): Dustin Pedroia’s MRI revealed no fracture or structural damage to his right hand, according to the Red Sox.
