The Boston Bruins-Montreal Canadiens rivalry sometimes causes even the most mild-mannered players to get a little carried away. Just ask Bruins center Patrice Bergeron.
Bergeron’s anger boiled over during the teams’ second-round Stanley Cup playoffs series, which the Habs eventually won in seven games. In the first period of Game 6, however, Bergeron and Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban got tied up behind the play, and both players received roughing penalties. Thanks to the season finale of “Behind the B,” we know a little more about how it all went down.
The two players got tangled up in the corner after Subban pulled down Bergeron and gave him a little punch to the head. Bergeron immediately reacted to that, which is what earned him a penalty, too. This is how the conversation went after that:
Bergeron: Come on, man. Don’t do that.
Subban: Do what?
Bergeron: Seriously, bud.
Subban: What? Did I hit you in the head?
Bergeron: You know you did.
Subban: I thought you were (Brad Marchand).
Bergeron clearly wanted a little more information, as he thought Subban instigated the whole thing. At an ensuing break in the action, Bergeron sidled up next to referee Dan O’Halloran for a little more information and learned that had he not retaliated, the Bruins probably would have ended up on the power play.
Bergeron: Hey, were you going to call Subban right away?
O’Halloran: I was going to give him the first punch, but when he did it twice, I was going to get him. Then you …
Bergeron: Yeah, I know. I know. … Yeah. I’ll stay away from it. Thanks.
