It’s not often that a high school long snapper makes national news, but Aaron Golub is no ordinary long snapper.
Golub, a senior at Newton South High School (located just outside Boston) served as his team’s snapper for punts and extra points for the past two seasons despite being legally blind. Now, he’ll be taking his talents to the collegiate level after being offered a preferred walk-on spot at Division I Tulane University.
“Aaron is a tremendous young man who has not let adversity overcome his desire to fulfill his dreams of playing college football, and we look forward to having him as a part of our football program this fall,” Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said in a statement to CollegeFootballTalk.
Golub is completely blind in one eye and has very limited vision in the other. Despite this impairment, though, Newton South coach Ted Dalicandro said the 17-year-old has been tremendously effective on the field.
“He’s only had one bad snap in the last two years he’s snapped for us,” Dalicandro told WBZ-TV last week. “He’s best long snapper I’ve seen on the high school level.”
Golub will have competition for playing time when he gets to New Orleanns, as sophomore Michael Lizanich and senior Matt Marfisi are currently listed as the Nos. 1 and 2 long snappers on the Tulane depth chart, according to NOLA.com
“If you set your mind to it you can do it,” Golub said. “There’s nothing you can’t accomplish if you really want to do it.”
