Monday, 5 p.m. ET: Manchester United confirmed that Louis van Gaal will be its new manager on Monday.
Van Gaal, 62, is currently the manager of the Netherlands’ national team. The experienced coach will take over at Old Trafford following the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
After nearly a month of speculation, Van Gaal signed a three-year contract with Manchester United. The Dutchman will be expected to return the Red Devils to glory after they slipped from first to seventh place in the Premier League during David Moyes’ failed 10-month tenure and Ryan Giggs’ four-game stint as temporary manager.
Manchester United will likely hold Van Gaal’s introductory press conference in July.
Meanwhile, Giggs retired as a player on Monday and immediately assumed the role as van Gaal’s assistant manager.
