Luis Suarez may not win every popularity contest, but the sight of him crying on the field surely broke hearts around the soccer world.

Suarez was inconsolable following Liverpool’s 3-3 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday.

The Reds conceded three goals in 11 minutes at the end of the second half, turning certain victory into a draw.
After the final whistle, Suarez, 27, hunched over and wept into his jersey, as the television camera hovered over him.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard helped the distraught Uruguayan to his feet and escorted him off the field while waving the camera away.

The result most likely dealt a fatal blow to Liverpool’s chances of winning the 2013-14 Premier League title, and it was all too much for Suarez to take.

It was a sad ending to a day in which Suarez also won the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year Award, scored a record-tying goal and played his heart out for his team.

In a postgame interview, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said Suarez was crying because he is “a winner.” We’ll agree and add that Suarez’s tears also show the extent to which he cares, and how badly the collapse of both Liverpool’s lead and its title charge hurt him.
