Edin Dzeko Manchester City Aston VillaManchester City moved to the top of the Premier League standings Wednesday, and all signs suggest it will be holding that position when the season ends Sunday.

Manchester City beat Aston Villa 4-0 at Etihad Stadium to move two points clear of second-place Liverpool.

It took 64 minutes for Edin Dzeko to break the deadlock for the hosts, but once he did, more Manchester City goals soon followed. Dzeko scored his second in the 72nd minute, substitute Stevan Jovetic made it 3-0 in the 89th minute, and Yaya Toure capped off the scoring with a wonder-goal in stoppage time.

Manchester City’s victory eliminated Chelsea from title contention. Manuel Pellegrini’s team now needs a win Sunday — at home against 12th-placed West Ham United — to win the 2013-14 Premier League championship on points.

If West Ham holds Manchester City to a draw and Liverpool beats Newcastle United, goal differential will determine the winner. Manchester City leads Liverpool in that department by 13 goals, meaning the Reds would have to score at least 14 against the Magpies to make up the difference.

ESPN worked out the chances of that happening.

The final round of games will take place simultaneously Sunday, kicking off at 10 a.m. ET.
