There appears to be a bit of unrest within the clubhouse of the New Orleans Zephyrs.
The Zephyrs — the Triple-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins — recently were without two of their relief pitchers after one, Sam Dyson, suffered a broken jaw in a bar fight and another, Chris Hatcher, was suspended five games for his involvement in said fight.
The fight took place April 29 at a Nashville bar, a source in the organization told the New Orleans Advocate, after the Zephyrs’ 9-4 win over the Nashville Sounds. Dyson underwent surgery in Miami and reportedly is expected to miss six weeks.
When questioned about the incident Tuesday, Hatcher refused to divulge what prompted the altercation.
“I’m not getting into that; can’t do it,” he said. “I’m suspended for conduct detrimental to the team. Unfortunately (the incident) happened, and I’m going to leave it at that.”
“It happens,” Zephyrs manager Andy Haines added. “I don’t know exactly what happened, but we’re trying to (move) forward.”
Hatcher, who has appeared in 29 major league games for the Marlins in his career, returned from his suspension Wednesday and worked a scoreless inning in a 3-0 loss to the Iowa Cubs.
Dyson has spent two brief stints in the majors, appearing in five games with the Marlins last season and two with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012.
