Any baseball game that finishes with the scoreboard reading 20-17 is inherently newsworthy. But the path the Class-A Clinton LumberKings and Burlington Bees took Wednesday to reach that final score, usually reserved for the football field, elevates the game from interesting to downright stunning.
The LumberKings, a minor league affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, trailed the Bees 17-1 after five innings before rallying for 19 unanswered runs, the final three of which broke a 17-all tie in the top of the 12th. The box score itself is staggering.
Clinton has become somewhat of an expert at these kinds of things, though. Just four days earlier, the LumberKings erased an eight-run deficit and scored five runs with two outs in the ninth inning to knock off the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 13-12.
“That is a crazy win,” LumberKings manager Scott Steinmann told MiLB.com after Wednesday’s game. “I’ve never been a part of something like that. The closest thing is four days ago. (Another comeback) says a lot. They weren’t giving up. They stayed in it the whole time.”
Clinton designated hitter Justin Seager tallied a game-high four hits in the contest (4-for-7) and drove in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI groundout in the 12th.
