Bill Belichick started the NFL’s two-tight end craze, and now he’s destroying it.
Nearly every NFL draft pundit — including NESN.com’s — listed tight end as one of the New England Patriots’ biggest needs heading into the 2014 draft. The Patriots waited until after the draft to address the position, however, with two unknowns: Justin Jones, who missed the 2013 season due to academics, and Asa Watson, who caught just three passes in 2013.
Jones and Watson will back up Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams as the Patriots head into next week’s OTAs, and unless New England signs veteran free agent Dustin Keller, its depth in 2014 will be even worse than it was in 2013, when Gronkowski added another ailment — a torn ACL — to his existing fragility.
