Patriots Sign Six, Including Rutgers’ Jeremy Deering, Iowa’s James Morris

Jeremy DeeringThe New England Patriots added five players to their 90-man roster on Friday.

The Patriots signed Rutgers safety Jeremy Deering, Iowa linebacker James Morris and Harvard long snapper Tyler Ott as undrafted free agents, according to the NFL transaction wire. The Patriots also signed veteran linebacker Darius Fleming, who was a fifth-round draft pick by the San Francisco 49ers in 2012.

The Patriots signed two more draft picks on Friday — running back James White and wide receiver Jeremy Gallon. White was a fourth-round selection (No. 130 overall) out of Wisconsin and Gallon was a seventh-round pick (No. 244 overall) out of Michigan.

The Patriots signed fourth-round selection Cameron Fleming, who played right tackle at Stanford, earlier on Friday.

Deering played safety, wide receiver, wildcat quarterback and special teams at Rutgers. He had an impressive pro day in March, running a 4.40-second 40-yard dash, 6.99-second three-cone and 4.32-second short shuttle with a 10-foot-6 broad jump and 33.5-inch vertical leap.

He had 151 offensive touches for 993 yards with three touchdowns in his four years at Rutgers with 41 kick returns for 1,100 yards with a touchdown. He recorded 39 tackles with an interception as a defensive back in 2013.

Morris recorded 106 tackles with seven sacks, 17 tackles for loss and four interceptions in 2013. The 6-foot-1, 241-pound linebacker ran a 4.67-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in March with a 4.33-second short shuttle, 36-inch vertical leap and 10 feet broad jump. He ran a 6.94 three-cone at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Darius Fleming has not played in an NFL game yet. He tore his right ACL in May 2012 during rookie minicamp and his left ACL in July 2013 at training camp.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound linebacker ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in April 2012. He ran a 7.03-second three-cone and 4.28-second short shuttle at the 2012 combine with a 33.5-inch vertical leap and 9-foot-6 broad jump.

Fleming recorded 157 tackles, 32 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks in four seasons with the Fighting Irish.
