Minnesota Wild center Charlie Coyle has become the latest player to be added to the “hockey players are tough” collection.
The Weymouth, Mass., native put up impressive numbers in the 2014 NHL playoffs, scoring three times with four assists in 13 games before the Wild were eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday night. But Coyle’s production becomes even more impressive when the pain he played through is taken into consideration.
According to Michael Russo of the Minnesota Star-Tribune, the Boston University product was playing with two separated shoulders at the end of his team’s playoff run.
“Charlie Coyle was playing with both a separated left shoulder and right shoulder, sources say. It was very noticeable to me in Chicago that he was playing hurt in Game 5,” Russo wrote, “and last night, it was very apparent he was having trouble catching passes and stick-handling.”
Even more unbelievable than Coyle somehow being able to hold onto a stick, much less shoot the puck, is that the 22-year-old played more than 21 minutes in Game 6 and registered three shots on goal.
Because it’s the Cup, indeed.
