The New England Revolution made a statement of intent Sunday with a 5-0 defeat of the Seattle Sounders at Gillette Stadium.
Revolution forwards Patrick Mullins, Teal Bunbury and Diego Fagundez scored in a four-goal first-half barrage, and Seattle’s Chad Marshall scored an own goal in the second half to complete the rout.
Fagundez ended a frustrating barren run with his two first goals of the season. Mullins, who was playing in his third MLS game, scored in his second straight game.
The Revs (5-3-2) are unbeaten in their last five games, winning four and drawing once since April 12.
New England ended Seattle’s six-game unbeaten streak and consigned the league’s highest-scoring team to its first shutout of the season.
The win also moved the Revs into first place in MLS’ Eastern Conference where they are tied with Sporting Kansas City with 17 points.
The Revs return to action Saturday when they visit the Philadelphia Union at PPL Park. The game kicks off at 7 p.m. ET.
