Masters GolfRory McIlroy isn’t a professional golfer known for slow play on the golf course, but his off-course relationship with tennis player Caroline Wozniacki was moving a little too fast for McIlroy.

McIlroy has ended his engagement with Wozniacki, BBC Sport reports, just about five months after McIlroy proposed on New Year’s Eve.  That’s not even the worst part of the story. According to McIlroy, he recently got cold feet as the couple sent out the wedding invitations.

“The problem is mine,” McIlroy said, according to BBC. “The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails.”

Not only is the wedding off, the relationship has evidently come to an end.

“There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two people,” McIlroy said in his statement. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we have had.”

McIlroy hasn’t played his best golf this season. He’s ranked 34th in the FedEx Cup standings and sits 10th in the world golf rankings. He finished tied for eighth at the Masters, but he needed a big showing on Sunday to move up the leaderboard after shooting a 77 on Friday at Augusta.

He does have six top-10 finishes this season, four of which have come in his last four tournaments.
