Rutgers University president Robert Barchi said there was some miscommunication between the university and former football player Eric LeGrand after a story broke about the university’s offer for LeGrand to speak at graduation being taken off the table.
In a statement released by the school, Barchi said LeGrand will now speak at the commencement ceremonies and will receive his degree from Barchi personally.

On Tuesday, the paralyzed former football player told USA Today that an official from Rutgers had offered him the chance to speak at graduation. LeGrand said he got a call Monday from the school’s athletic director, who told him that the university was going in a different direction for its keynote speaker “for political reasons.”
LeGrand expressed his disappointment about the opportunity being taken away, and many who chimed in on social media were disappointed with the school’s actions.
