Shane VictorinoBOSTON — Shane Victorino underwent an MRI on his left knee Friday. The Boston Red Sox outfielder is unavailable for the club’s series opener against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park, according to manager John Farrell.

Victorino jammed his knee while sliding into third base against the Texas Rangers, according to Farrell. The 33-year-old sat out Thursday’s series finale against the Minnesota Twins at Target Field, and his status for the Red Sox’s series against the Tigers is unclear.

“Shane came in today, and we had a chance to take a look at the left knee that’s still a little bothersome for him,” Farrell said Friday. “He’s going to go for some imaging here this afternoon to try to get a better read on what he’s dealing with. The recommendation of the medical staff was to hold him out today at a minimum. And hopefully, the information we get back is this is a short-term situation.”

Victorino missed the Red Sox’s first 22 regular-season games this season because of a hamstring injury he suffered in Boston’s final spring training game. The outfielder has made a major impact since returning to the Red Sox’s lineup, though, so losing him for an extended period of time obviously would be a huge blow.

Victorino is hitting .292 with nine RBIs and a .333 on-base percentage in 15 games this season.
