Shawn ThorntonBOSTON — Bruins forward Shawn Thornton had a hearty laugh Saturday night after he squirted water at Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban. It’s probably safe to assume Thornton was less enthused Sunday morning.

The NHL fined Thornton $2,820.52 for “unsportsmanlike conduct” during the Bruins’ 4-2 win in Game 5 of their second-round Stanley Cup playoffs series against Montreal. Thornton squirted Subban with water bottle from the Boston bench as the Montreal d-man skated by in the final minutes of the game.

The fine is the largest the NHL could give Thornton under the collective bargaining agreement.

Thornton was unavailable for comment following Saturday night’s game.
