The Texas Rangers’ recent woes just got worse.
The team announced Thursday that first baseman Prince Fielder will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disk in his neck. The surgery is scheduled for Tuesday.
Fielder was part of a blockbuster trade between the Rangers and the Detroit Tigers this offseason, which sent second baseman Ian Kinsler to Motown. Fielder was supposed to add more power to Texas’ lineup, but he only had three home runs and 16 RBIs before hitting the disabled list.
The slugger is making $24 million this season and is signed through 2020.
Fielder only adds to a laundry list of injuries for the Rangers. Left-handed starting pitcher Martin Perez had season-ending Tommy John surgery Monday, and left-hander Matt Harrison is considering spinal fusion surgery, which could end his career.
Texas also started the season without second baseman Jurickson Profar, catcher Geovany Soto and starter Derek Holland.
The Rangers are 4-6 in their last 10 games as of Thursday afternoon and are 7 1/2 games behind the Oakland A’s in the American League West.
