You can’t accuse an athlete of cheating and expect nothing to happen, even if it is a joke.
San Francisco Giants announcer Mike Krukow found this out after suggesting that Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki’s .521 batting average at Coors Field must be due to him stealing signs from other teams.
Coors Field sits a mile above sea level, so the Rockies often post some crazy numbers there. To put it into perspective, as of Friday afternoon, they’re 16-7 at home and 10-14 on the road. Ordinarily, that alone would be enough to brush off any accusations thrown their way.
But Tulowitzki wanted to have some fun with it.
The Rockies star changed his walk-up music to the 1990s Ace of Base hit “I Saw the Sign” in Thursday afternoon’s game against the Giants in response to the accusation. Tulowitski went 1-for-2 before the game was suspended in the sixth inning due to rain.
Rockies manager Walt Weiss also had an amusing response to Krukow’s joke.
“My response is we do it all,” Weiss said. “We’ve got a light bulb on the scoreboard we flash. Keep an eye on Dinger (the triceratops mascot); he’s involved. We switch out the balls. We’ve got the umpires in on it.
“I love it when other teams talk about that. I think it just feeds the beast.”
