Not many inside-the-park home runs begin with a flip of the bat and a casual jog to first base, but that’s all it took for Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Wil Myers on Sunday afternoon.
During the third inning against the New York Yankees, Myers drove a ball to deep center field with runners on first and second. Yankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury collided with the wall as he attempted to haul in the shot off Myers’ bat, but the ball was out of his reach and it hit the top of the wall before rolling toward right field.
Seeing the mess in the outfield, Myers turned it on as he rounded first base and by the time Carlos Beltran retrieved the ball from the warning track, the Yankees had zero chance of throwing him out. In fact, Myers scored before the ball even returned to the infield.
