Alfredo Aceves’ second stint with the New York Yankees was less than impressive.
Aceves was designated for assignment by the Yankees on Wednesday after posting a 6.52 ERA (14 earned runs in 19 1/3 innings) over 10 appearances. The Yankees also optioned pitcher Preston Claiborne to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre while calling up pitcher Jose Ramirez and activating pitcher Wade LeBlanc, who New York claimed off waivers Tuesday.
Aceves has struggled to gain any traction this season. The 31-year-old opted out of his contract with the Baltimore Orioles at the end of spring training and signed with the Yankees. Aceves posted a 1.40 WHIP with the Bronx Bombers after being called up May 3 and now finds himself looking for another major league opportunity.
The Boston Red Sox essentially wrote off Aceves last season after ineffectiveness and questionable behavior. Aceves had a good 2011 season with the Red Sox, posting a 10-2 record and 2.61 ERA in 55 appearances (four starts), but it’s been all downhill since for the polarizing right-hander.
