Reigning Wimbledon champion Andy Murray took a heroic little detour on his way to practice Sunday morning.
The tennis player was driving to the All England Club when he spotted a labradoodle running toward oncoming cars on a busy road. Murray’s casual drive to practice turned into a rescue mission soon enough, though, as he pulled over and saved the scared pup.
“I parked the car and got out and tried to stop the traffic because the dog was running towards the oncoming traffic,” Murray told BBC. “I ran into the road, stopped the traffic and I managed to get the dog onto the back seat of my car.
“Then I drove to the place where all of the people walk their dogs, which is literally just round the corner. I called the number on the tag and amazingly my two dogs walk with that dog quite a lot. I met the owner and she was happy I’d picked it up.”
It isn’t all that surprising that Murray, a self-proclaimed dog lover who has two canines of his own, would go out of his way to help the runaway pet. But the selfless gesture certainly earned him some good karma, which might have even translated on the court, as he defeated David Goffin 6-1, 6-4, 7-5 in his opening match at Wimbledon on Monday.
