BOSTON — Brandon Workman finally received a verdict in the appeal of his six-game suspension, and it’s not what the Red Sox right-hander hoped.
Major League Baseball upheld the ban, the Red Sox announced during Wednesday’s game against the Minnesota Twins, and Workman now will begin serving his punishment.
Workman’s suspension, originally handed down June 3, stems from a May 30 matchup between the Red Sox and Rays, during which the 25-year-old was ejected for “intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area” of Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria.
Tampa Bay starter David Price, who hit both David Ortiz and Mike Carp during the same game, was fined as a result but avoided suspension.
Workman made three starts for the Red Sox during the appeals process, allowing a total of five runs on 10 hits over 17 2/3 innings.
