The Chicago Bears added yet another name to their backup quarterback competition, signing former Notre Dame standout Jimmy Clausen, the team announced Thursday.

Clausen’s quarterbacks coach, Steve Clarkson, first reported the news. Shortly after, Clausen tweeted that he would be joining the Bears.

Clausen was a second-round draft pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2010 and played in 13 games during his rookie season, throwing for 1,558 yards and three touchdowns with nine interceptions. The next season, though, the Panthers drafted Cam Newton with the No. 1 overall pick, and Clausen hasn’t seen a regular-season snap since.
Clausen remained with the Panthers until his rookie contract expired in March, and although it took some time, it appears he has another shot in the NFL.
Clausen, who threw for 8,148 yards and 60 TDs with 27 picks during his three years with the Fighting Irish, figures to compete with veteran Jordan Palmer and San Jose State’s David Fales for the No. 2 job behind Jay Cutler.
