The result was never in doubt for Los Cafeteros on Saturday.
Colombia set the tone in their opening game against Greece at the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a goal just five minutes into the action, then added two more scores to cruise to a 3-0 win.
Defender Pablo Armero started the scoring at the five-minute mark when his strike from close range deflected off the leg of a Greek defender and rolled past goaltender Orestis Karnezis to put Colombia up 1-0.
The Colombians were held scoreless for the remainder of the half but came out strong in the second frame, getting a goal from striker Teófilo Gutiérrez at the 58-minute mark when he knocked in a cross just outside of the goal mouth.
With the game securely in hand as time wound down, Colombia added a third goal during stoppage time. In the 93rd minute, midfielder James Rodriguez took a nice back-heel feed from Juan Guillermo and buried a left-footed shot from the top of the box.
Colombia’s convincing win gives it a crucial early lead in Group C, while Greece’s setback leaves a tough road ahead. Ivory Coast and Japan, the other two squads in the group, square off later on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET.
