Darrelle Revis signed a one-year, $12 million contract (with a second-year option for $20 million) with the New England Patriots in March, making him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL per season.
But much has been made as to whether or not Revis is still the league’s top lockdown corner, as many think Richard Sherman has surpassed the eight-year veteran.
Revis insists, though, that he isn’t interested in how he stacks up to other top players in the league.
“No, I don’t feel like I have to prove nothing to anybody,” Revis told the Boston Globe’s Shalise Manza Young. “The only thing I have to prove is to my teammates, that I’m there for them and I’m there to win games and help us win. All that other stuff, it really don’t matter. It really doesn’t. Anybody can say anything; it is what it is.”
There are some former NFL players, though, who think Revis is trying to prove himself as the league’s best once again. One of those former players is longtime friend and mentor, former New England defensive back Ty Law.
“He’s definitely out there with something to prove because of all the guys getting the big contracts, and he was down in Tampa Bay as a forgotten guy,” Law said. “He’s still thinking, ‘Wait a minute, I’m, still top dog.’ And he wants to win, that’s the most important thing.”
Regardless of what people say about Revis’ motives, though, the 28-year-old just keeps trudging on, waiting for the moment when he can let his play talk for itself.
