Darrelle Revis believes his Tampa Bay Buccaneers tenure and Greg Schiano’s ended the same way: They both were fired.
An NFL player can’t be “fired,” per se, but Revis was released after one season with the Bucs, which is the athlete’s version of being axed from a job.
“Every coach has their own philosophy and coaching style,” Revis told the Tampa Bay Times this week in Florida at the Drew Brees Passing Academy. “It could work, it could not work. It didn’t, and we went 4-12. The result is 4-12. That’s what you get. It’s already spoken what happened. A lot of us got fired.”
Revis played well with the Bucs, but it didn’t make sense for them to carry a $16 million cornerback when new head coach Lovie Smith was bringing in his Tampa-2 defense, which relies on zone coverage — a skill that can be found cheaper in free agency.
Schiano, who went 11-20 as the Bucs’ head coach, didn’t fare as well with Tampa Bay.
Revis was asked by the Tampa Bay Times what he missed about playing in Tampa Bay, and the New England Patriots cornerback quickly answered “the weather,” before adding that he also misses his former teammates.
“I miss the guys there. That was a team that accepted me as well,” Revis said. “That’s a young group down there, and those guys were really fun to be around.”
Revis signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Patriots after being released by the Bucs. Revis has impressed his new teammates since arriving in New England.
