The Arizona Diamondbacks needed to enforce one of baseball’s “unwritten rules,” and they figured Ryan Braun was as good a target as any.
Boy, were they wrong.
It all started in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Milwaukee Brewers starter Kyle Lohse drilled Diamondbacks batter Chris Owings with a high inside fastball.
The next inning, with Arizona holding a 5-3 lead, Diamondbacks reliever Evan Marshall found himself in a jam, facing Braun with nobody out and runners on second and third. Marshall decided to settle the score by drilling the Brewers slugger on the backside, prompting an immediate ejection by home plate umpire Ted Barrett.
That loaded the bases for Jonathan Lucroy, who made the D-backs pay on the very next pitch.

Marshall was actually applauded by his teammates after plunking Braun, but in this case, his retaliation cost directly cost his team an extra run –and ultimately the game — as Arizona lost 7-5.
The Diamondbacks might want to edit that unwritten rule.
