Golfer Landon Michelson is still kicking himself over the mental lapse that cost him a chance to compete at the U.S. Open.

Michelson, a 22-year-old recent graduate from Rice University, shot a 71 in each of his two qualifying rounds Monday at Quail Valley Golf Club in Vero Beach, Fla. — a score that should have qualified him for the Open, which begins next week.

The amateur signed and turned in an incorrect scorecard, though, resulting in his disqualification.

“Essentially, I’m here today talking to you and dealing with all this just because I’m a huge idiot,” Michelson said Tuesday on the Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive.” “It’s all on me. In golf, like I said, you have to be responsible for signing your own score and for writing everything down. It’s not my caddie’s fault. It’s not my playing partner’s fault. It’s my fault.”

Michelson was ranked No. 1,035 in the most recent World Amateur Golf Rankings.
