It took 12 games, but the 2014 World Cup finally saw its first draw Monday as Iran and Nigeria battled to a 0-0 tie in a Group F opener.
Nigeria dominated possession throughout the game in Curitiba, Brazil, holding onto the ball for 69 percent of the time. It also had several solid chances in the first half but failed to capitalize on anything.
The Nigerians actually did put the ball in the back of the net in the seventh minute, but Ahmed Musa’s goal was disallowed after officials ruled John Obi Mikel interfered with Iran keeper Alireza Haghighi.
Iran’s best chance came in the 34th minute when Reza Ghoochannejhad’s hard shot was stopped by Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama.
Chances were limited in the second half as the teams offered the fewest amount of goals in this year’s World Cup since Mexico defeated Cameroon 1-0 on the second day of play.
Both teams return to action Saturday when Iran plays powerhouse Argentina and Nigeria takes on Bosnia-Herzegovina.
