John Brooks Had Dreamed About Scoring Team USA's Game-Winning Goal

The backup central defender for Team USA wasn’t even expected to play in his country’s 2014 FIFA World Cup opener against Ghana, but when Matt Besler went down with an injury toward the end of the first half, Brooks was thrust into action.

But it didn’t take long for Brooks, 21, to become a household name, as he scored the game-winning goal in the 86th minute.

Brooks’ clutch header might have been a surprise to most, but not Brooks, who recently had a dream that was eerily close to the events that actually transpired Monday night.

“I told some teammates that I would score in the 80th minute and win the game and I did it — in the 86th minute,” he said after the game, according to Yahoo’s Martin Rogers. “The dream was two days ago, and it was also a header from a corner.”

So, in addition to becoming America’s new soccer hero, Brooks also is a psychic. His goal came just four minutes after Ghana’s Andre Ayew tied things at 1, and he told Rogers that he remembered his dream immediately after he scored while he was being mobbed by his teammates.

“I hadn’t thought about it before then,” he said. “When I came in, I just wanted to do simple things right. In the first few moments, I was very nervous. … This was the first dream like that I’ve had. Hopefully it is not the last.”

All of America certainly hopes it isn’t the last of its kind, either.
