Manny Ramirez served both roles of his job as Iowa Cubs player-coach Thursday night.
The former Boston Red Sox outfielder was a coach in Game 1 of the Triple-A Cubs’ doubleheader at Colorado Springs, and he made his debut in left field in Game 2. Ramirez reported to the minor league club Thursday.
Ramirez went 0-for-4 in his 2014 playing debut and didn’t field a defensive play for the Cubs, who lost 7-6. He reached on an error in his first at-bat.
Ramirez played in the Texas Rangers’ organization in 2013 and in the Oakland Athletics’ organization in 2012. His last at-bat in the major leagues came in 2011 with the Tampa Bay Rays. Ramirez batted .059 in five games with the Rays.
