1401674930_mexicoTwo minutes after Luis Montes scored a remarkable goal Saturday afternoon to give Mexico a two-goal lead against Ecuador in a 2014 FIFA World Cup warmup game, he went down with a devastating injury.

Montes suffered a broken tibia and fibula after colliding with Ecuador’s Segundo Castillo and will miss the World Cup. According to FOX Sports, Mexican players were in tears while the midfielder was being stretchered off the field.

“We prayed for him and now we’re going to hope that he recuperates as soon as possible,” Mexico coach Miguel Herrera said through a translator, via FOX News Latino. “We’re going to have a long talk tomorrow to keep the players focused.”

The injury is a serious blow to Mexico’s chances in Brazil, as the 28-year-old has established himself as a key scorer for the squad. Mexico’s first World Cup game is June 13 against Cameroon.
