Mike Carp was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday amid a flurry of roster moves by the Boston Red Sox.
Carp’s placement on the DL coincides with third baseman Garin Cecchini’s demotion to Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox recalled shortstop Stephen Drew and outfielder Daniel Nava before Monday’s game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.
Carp underwent a CT scan Sunday that revealed a fracture in his right foot. He suffered the injury when he was struck by a pitch last week against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. Carp wore a walking boot in the Red Sox’s clubhouse immediately following Sunday’s game.
Cecchini made his major league debut Sunday after being called up before the game. The 23-year-old went 1-for-2 with an RBI double.
Drew, who spent the 2013 season with Boston, was re-signed to a one-year, prorated contract on May 21. He did not appear in a game with the Red Sox and embarked on a seven-game minor league assignment, during which he went 5-for-21 (.238) with three doubles, two RBIs, two walks and a run scored between Single-A Greenville (3 games) and Triple-A Pawtucket (4 games).
Nava is making his third major league stint this season. He is batting .130 (10-for-77) with two homers and three RBIs in 22 games.
