Manny MachadoManny Machado threw a bat, and pretty soon Major League Baseball is likely to bring down the hammer in the form of a fine or suspension.

Before that happens, the Baltimore Orioles’ third baseman apologized for his actions Sunday, when he hurled a bat toward Oakland A’s third baseman Josh Donaldson after a second inside pitch by Fernando Abad. On Monday, Machado acted repentant.

“I want to apologize to all my teammates, my coaching staff, the entire Orioles organization and Oakland, and to my fans for the way I acted,” Machado said, according to MLB.com. “That’s not the way we play baseball around here.”

Machado apparently was upset over a hard tag he received from Donaldson during Friday’s game. The hard feelings boiled over Sunday, with Machado tossing his bat and both benches clearing. After the game, A’s catcher Derek Norris — who Machado singled out for an extra apology Monday — called Machado “a disgrace to the game.”

Machado did not take questions from reporters and reportedly left the clubhouse as soon as the media was allowed to enter Monday afternoon.
