It’s not every day you see a Triple-A no-hitter broken up by a four-time major league All-Star.
Pawtucket Red Sox starter Chris Hernandez carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Sunday at McCoy Stadium. The 25-year-old’s no-hit bid ended when Cincinnati Reds slugger Joey Votto, who is rehabbing with Triple-A Louisville, singled into center field.
Votto, of course, is one of Major League Baseball’s best hitters. The Reds first baseman has led the National League in on-base percentage each of the last four seasons, even winning NL MVP honors in 2010. Votto currently is working his way back from a quadriceps injury, and the 30-year-old made his final at-bat of Sunday’s rehab start count.
Hernandez, who was drafted by the Red Sox in the seventh round in 2010, has spent his entire 2014 season with Triple-A Pawtucket. The left-hander tossed 7 1/3 solid innings Sunday despite losing his no-hitter. The PawSox held on for a 4-3 win.
