Philadelphia Phillies announcer Tom McCarthy probably never thought he would catch a home run ball with his job as play-by-play man. But Friday night, that all changed.
During the Phillies’ game against the Atlanta Braves, the Philly broadcast crew called the game from the center field bleachers. McCarthy came prepared and brought his glove to the game. It was a good choice.

Right off the bat in the first inning, Atlanta slugger Freddie Freeman crushed a pitch to dead center. McCarthy not only made the home run call on TV, but he also made the catch. It’s been a good few days for announcers catching baseballs, as Rex Hudler of the Kansas City Royals’ announcing team caught a foul ball in the press box last week.
To top it off, McCarthy did what any true fan of the home team would do: He threw it back.
The Phillies did not have the same luck McCarthy did, however, as they fell to the Braves 4-2.
