Derick Brassard had the puck behind the net and fed Ryan McDonagh for a one-time shot from the right faceoff circle. That shot went off of Mats Zuccarello at the left post, and the Rangers winger capitalized on the loose puck in the crease to give his team another goal.

McDonagh now has a goal and an assist tonight.

5:45 p.m. ET: Alain Vigneault spoke to reporters before Game 2 and is satisfied with the mindset and preparation he’s seen from his players.

“You know, we’ve talked about it with our group. Our group knows the importance of today’s game,” Vigneault said. “They’re going to try and put their best game on the ice.

“They’ve been very professional in how they prepare. We got through the first game jitters. Obviously we don’t have the experience that L.A. does. We got them through that first game, took them to overtime, and I think we’ll be better tonight.”

Kings head coach Darryl Sutter took two questions from the media, one of which involved the status of veteran D-man Robyn Regehr. Sutter said the decision on whether to play Regehr, who’s overcome an injury, will be made after the on-ice warmup.

5:00 p.m. ET: The New York Rangers got off to a near-perfect start in Game 1 of the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, but they couldn’t put away the Los Angeles Kings, who are quickly becoming one of the most resilient teams in NHL history.

The Kings won in overtime with a goal from Justin Williams, and they will attempt to take a 2-0 series lead when these teams meet at Staples Center on Saturday night for Game 2.

This is a critical game for the Blueshirts. Of the 48 teams that have taken a 2-0 series lead in the Cup Final, 89.9 percent of them won the Stanley Cup. In fact, 74.3 percent of Game 2 winners since the league went to a Best-of-7 format in 1939 went on to hoist the best trophy in sports. The last team to win the Stanley Cup after trailing the series 2-0 was the 2011 Boston Bruins.

For the Rangers to avoid an 0-2 hole, they need another fantastic performance from goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. He was brilliant in Game 1, especially on the penalty kill and in the third period.
