They just don’t make bats like they used to anymore.

In the top of the eighth inning Sunday afternoon, Jerry Sands came up as a pinch hitter for the Tampa Bay Rays. With runners at first and second and the game tied 3-3 against the Houston Astros, Sands had a chance to come through in a big way. He did just that, but not before some lumber was destroyed.

Sands fouled off a 1-0 pitch from Jerome Williams, but also broke a piece off the barrel. He was forced to grab some new wood, this time a black bat. Two pitches later, he splintered that bat as well.

Usually the third time is a charm, but for Sands’ bat, that wasn’t the case. On a 3-2 offering, he lined a single into left field, which brought in a run, but he also cracked the bat, making it three straight swings where he broke one. Impressive.

Check out the video below of Sands’ crazy at-bat.
