Final, Indians 5-3: Cody Allen retired the side in order in the ninth inning. The Red Sox have dropped two straight.
Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Grady Sizemore failed to create any ninth-inning magic. Pedroia and Ortiz flied to center field. Sizemore, pinch-hitting for Jonny Gomes, struck out.
Michael Bourn’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference. Bourn doubled off Andrew Miller after Jake Peavy allowed the first two hitters of the inning to reach.
The Red Sox trailed 3-0 after the first inning and battled back to tie the game at three apiece on Pedroia’s RBI double in the seventh. It wasn’t enough, though, as Bourn quickly recaptured the lead.
The Red Sox, who entered the series on the heels of seven straight victories, now must halt another losing streak. Brandon Workman is in line to start Wednesday after appealing his six-game suspension.
End 8th, Indians 5-3: The eighth inning was an ugly one for the Red Sox’s infield.
Jason Kipnis singled into left field to lead off the inning. Craig Breslow had Kipnis picked off with one out, but Brock Holt’s throw down to second base struck Kipnis in the back. That allowed him to reach safely.
If that wasn’t enough, Ryan Raburn hit a ground ball to short that kicked off another circus play that didn’t result in any outs.
Xander Bogaerts saw Kipnis break for third base. Bogaerts decided to try to nab him getting back to the bag, but his throw was in the dirt. A disgusting rundown ensued and everyone was safe.
David Murphy singled to load the bases with one out, at which point John Farrell turned to Burke Badenhop. Badenhop needed two pitches to get Yan Gomes to ground into a huge, inning-ending double play.
Mid 8th, Indians 5-3: The Red Sox are three offensive outs away from suffering back-to-back losses.
Jonathan Herrera tried to spark an eighth-inning rally by singling into left field with one out. Herrera has two hits, as he also doubled home a run back in the sixth inning.
Nick Hagadone struck out Brock Holt for the second out. Holt was rung up on a slider that looked well off the plate.
Indians manager Terry Francona turned to Cody Allen for a four-out save. Allen got Xander Bogaerts to fly out to center field.
Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz and Jonny Gomes are due up for Boston in the ninth inning. First, the Red Sox need to keep the deficit at one run. John Farrell is turning to Craig Breslow.
End 7th, Indians 5-3: It didn’t take long for the Indians to recapture the lead.
Michael Bourn drove a 2-1 fastball from Andrew Miller over Jonny Gomes’ head in left field. Two runs scored to give Cleveland a 5-3 advantage.
Jake Peavy started the inning and allowed the first two hitters to reach. David Murphy walked and Yan Gomes singled.
Mike Aviles attempted to drop down a sacrifice bunt, but it was right back to Peavy, who turned and fired to third base to nab the lead runner.
Xander Bogaerts aggressively tossed across the diamond in an effort to spin a unique double play. Dustin Pedroia, who was covering first base with Brock Holt charging the bunt, made a terrific diving stop on a ball in the dirt.
Red Sox manager John Farrell opted for the lefty-lefty matchup and called upon Miller to face Bourn. Bourn went to the opposite field with authority, and he’s now 5-for-7 in his career against Miller.
Miller struck out Asdrubal Cabrera and Michael Brantley to avoid any additional damage. The Red Sox’s offense only has six outs to work with, though.
Mid 7th, 3-3: We’re all tied at three apiece.
Xander Bogaerts, who homered in the third inning, led off the seventh with a shot into the left-center field gap. Bogaerts cruised into second base with his 16th double of the season.
Dustin Pedroia wasted no time in driving in Bogaerts, though a good relay from the Indians probably would have cut down the 21-year-old at home.
Pedroia dropped the first pitch he saw up the right field line. Bogaerts initially held up to make sure it dropped, and he actually slowed up a bit while approaching third base. Third base coach Brian Butterfield still waved Bogaerts in, though, and the relay throw was off the mark.
Scott Atchison, a former Red Sox, intentionally walked David Ortiz with first base open. He then got Jonny Gomes to pop out before giving way to former Red Sox farmhand Nick Hagadone.
Hagadone brought some heat upon entering the game. He struck out both A.J. Pierzynski and Alex Hassan to escape the jam. Hassan has struck out four times in this game.
End 6th, Indians 3-2: Jake Peavy retired 14 in a row before surrendering a two-out single to Lonnie Chisenhall in the sixth inning.
Peavy, who has been in total control since the first inning, retired Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis to begin the bottom of the sixth. Brantley flied out to Jackie Bradley Jr., and Kipnis grounded to Dustin Pedroia at second base.
Chisenhall grounded a base hit into center field with two down. Peavy wasn’t disrupted, though, as he settled back down to retire Ryan Raburn on a ground ball to short.
Mid 6th, Indians 3-2: The Red Sox have cut the deficit to one.
Jonathan Herrera sent a two-out RBI single into left-center field in the sixth inning. Jonny Gomes crossed with Boston’s second run.
Gomes led off the inning with a walk. Marc Rzepczynski took over for starter T.J. House at that point and plunked Jackie Bradley Jr. with his third pitch.
The Red Sox had a chance for more after Herrera’s knock, as a ball in the dirt put two runners into scoring position for Brock Holt. Holt grounded to third base to end the inning.
End 5th Indians 3-1: Jake Peavy has settled down nicely since his early struggles.
Peavy worked another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, and he’s now retired 12 in a row.
Mike Aviles, Michael Bourn and Asdrubal Cabrera went down in order in the fifth.
Mid 5th, Indians 3-1: The fifth inning started with a bang-bang play at first base.
Brock Holt attempted to bunt his way aboard. Indians starter T.J. House charged off the mound and, realizing he needed to hurry, made a glove-to-glove shovel toss to first base to retire Holt just in time.
Dustin Pedroia walked with two outs after Xander Bogaerts grounded to short.
David Ortiz put together an excellent, 11-pitch at-bat, but House finally won the battle. Ortiz lined out to center field.
End 4th, Indians 3-1: Jake Peavy has retired nine in a row.
Peavy needed just five pitches to work a 1-2-3 fourth inning. The right-hander is beginning to settle in after his early struggles.
Ryan Raburn and David Murphy both flied out. Yan Gomes popped out in the middle of the infield to end the inning.
Mid 4th, Indians 3-1: The Red Sox’s offense couldn’t carry any momentum into the fourth inning.
The bottom third of the order went down without a fight. Alex Hassan, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Jonathan Herrera were handled easily by Indians starter T.J. House.
Hassan struck out swinging for the second time. Bradley and Herrera both grounded out.
End 3rd, Indians 3-1: Jake Peavy worked his first clean inning of the game in the third.
Michael Brantley, Jason Kipnis and Lonnie Chisenhall went down in order against Peavy.
Peavy struck out Kipnis with a changeup in the dirt.
Mid 3rd, Indians 3-1: Xander Bogaerts did it again.
Bogaerts, who homered to right-center field in Monday’s loss, pulled a solo blast over the left field wall in the third inning.
Bogaerts has been on an absolute tear of late. He entered the game having reached safely in 19 of his last 21 games, hitting .369 (31-for-84) in that span.
The Red Sox continued to apply the pressure, as Dustin Pedroia and Jonny Gomes singled in the third inning. A.J. Pierzynski sent one toward the right-center field gap, but it hung up just long enough for the speedy Michael Bourn.
End 2nd, Indians 3-0: The Indians stranded a runner at third base in the second inning.
Yan Gomes led off with a dribbler to the left side of the mound. Jake Peavy charged off the hill to grab it, but his off-balance throw sailed past first baseman Brock Holt. Peavy would have been better off eating that one.
Gomes, who advanced to second base on Peavy’s throwing error, took third on Mike Aviles’ sacrifice bunt.
Peavy, to his credit, buckled down. Michael Bourn grounded to first base with the infield in, and Asdrubal Cabrera hit a line drive to right field that hung up long enough for Alex Hassan to make the catch.
Mid 2nd, Indians 3-0: The Red Sox produced two more hits in the second inning. But they again failed to cash in.
A.J. Pierzynski, whose 10-game hit streak was snapped Monday, led off with a single into left field.
T.J. House rebounded to strike out Alex Hassan, but Jackie Bradley Jr. kicked things up a notch with a single into left. Bradley demonstrated a nice piece of hitting by going the other way with an outside fastball.
Jonathan Herrera squandered the scoring chance by grounding into a 4-6-3 double play.
End 1st, Indians 3-0: The Indians, like they did Monday, jumped out to a first-inning lead. Jake Peavy struggled.
Cleveland started the game with five straight hits.
Michael Bourn led off with a single, and Asdrubal Cabrera sent him racing from first to third on a well-executed hit-and-run.
Michael Brantley gave the Indians a 1-0 lead with an RBI single into right field.
The cleanup hitter, Jason Kipnis, surprised the Red Sox with a bunt down the third base line. Peavy charged off the mound and Pierzynski raced out from behind the plate, but neither player was able to make the play. The two ran into each other.
Lonnie Chisenhall, who blooped a two-run single in the first inning Monday, dropped an RBI single into left field to give the Indians an early 2-0 lead.
Peavy finally recorded a couple of outs when Ryan Raburn grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, though Cleveland’s third run scored.
Mid 1st, 0-0: The Red Sox failed to capitalize on a scoring chance in the first inning of Monday’s game and it cost them. The Sox again put together a threat in the first inning of Tuesday’s game, and again Boston came away empty handed.
Brock Holt led off the game with a single into left field. Holt, who drilled four doubles in Sunday’s series finale against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, went 1-for-4 in Monday’s loss.
Xander Bogaerts was struck by a pitch in the leg to put two on with nobody out. Dustin Pedroia lined out to center field for the first out.
David Ortiz hit a bouncer to the right side that initially looked like a double-play ball. Instead, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, who was shifted over, took the sure out at first base as Holt and Bogaerts took third base and second base, respectively.
Jonny Gomes, who struck out with the bases loaded in the first inning of Monday’s game, struck out swinging with two men in scoring position this time around. On the bright side, Gomes at least got the bat off his shoulder.
7:06 p.m.: Brock Holt takes a first-pitch strike. The action in Cleveland is underway.
6:50 p.m.: Shortstop Stephen Drew returned to the Red Sox on Monday. He’ll be out of the lineup Tuesday with left-hander T.J. House getting the nod for the Indians.
Jonathan Herrera will play short, and Xander Bogaerts will play third base as the Red Sox look to get the 21-year-old acclimated to his new position. Bogaerts went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Monday’s loss.
Brock Holt will play first base for the third straight game. He figures to hold down the position and bat leadoff until first baseman Mike Napoli returns from the disabled list Sunday in Detroit.

6:30 p.m. ET: The Boston Red Sox finally met their match Monday in the form of Justin Masterson.
Masterson shut down the Red Sox’s offense for seven innings as Boston suffered a 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Red Sox.
Jake Peavy will look to put the Red Sox back on track Tuesday. He lasted eight innings in his last start Thursday against the Atlanta Braves, surrendering three runs on eight hits while striking out four. Peavy didn’t factor into the decision in that contest, as the Red Sox earned a walk-off victory off Braves closer Craig Kimbrel.
