The Boston Red Sox are on the mend.
The Red Sox entered Monday’s game against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field on the heels of a seven-game winning streak. Boston still is without some key starters, though, and manager John Farrell shed some light on their respective statuses before Monday’s contest.
— Mike Napoli (sprained finger) is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday. It appears he’ll do so at that point, barring any setbacks, without a minor league rehab stint.
“He’s doing all baseball activities, with no restrictions,” Farrell said Monday. “The ailments he was dealing with — the calf, the foot, those type of things — have cleared up and the swelling in the finger has gone down. I know he’s chomping at the bit to get back into the lineup right now.”
The Red Sox will wrap up a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday night.
— Shane Victorino (hamstring) has started light running. It’s still unclear when he’ll be ready for a rehab assignment.
— Mike Carp (fractured right foot) was placed on the 15-day DL on Monday.
Carp will remain in a walking boot for one week, after which he’ll need another week of rehab. He won’t be able to begin baseball activities until he completes the two weeks of rehab.
“We’re still a little ways away before he’s back to us,” Farrell said.
— Clay Buchholz (hyperextended knee) had a simulated game pushed back.
Buchholz originally was supposed to face Red Sox hitters Monday. Instead, the sim game has been pushed back by several days so that Buchholz can continue to work on his delivery while rehabbing from his knee injury.
The new plan calls for bullpen sessions Monday and Wednesday before Buchholz throws a sim game Saturday. It’s unlikely he’ll be available immediately after his 15-day DL stint is up.
— Felix Doubront (shoulder strain) threw a bullpen Monday at Progressive Field.
The Red Sox are ramping up the number of pitches thrown by Doubront. The left-hander will go out on a rehab assignment before rejoining the major league club, though it’s unclear when that will happen.
