Seven people, including former New Jersey Nets and New Jersey Devils owner Lewis Katz, were killed on Saturday night when the private plane they were in crashed at Hanscom Air Field in Bedford, Mass., according to CBS New York, citing a business associate of Katz’s.
Katz was most recently the co-owner of the Philadelphia Enquirer. He gained full control of the newspaper’s operation with a business partner by buying out their other co-owners for $88 million just days before his death. The Philadelphia Enquirer’s editor, Bill Marimow, confirmed Katz’s death to Philly.com.
Katz had been an investor in the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network, and bought the Nets in 1998. He owned the team during its most successful years in New Jersey, with the team reaching the NBA Finals in 2002 and ’03. He sold the team in 2004.
Katz also owned the NHL’s New Jersey Devils at one point.
