It’s that time of year. One minute the Boston Celtics are no better than third in the Kevin Love trade sweepstakes. The next minute, they have the best offer on the table.
Now, they have fallen back to the pack.
Despite an ESPN.com report that the Celtics’ offer of Jared Sullinger/Kelly Olynyk, the Nos. 6 and 17 picks in the 2014 NBA draft and future No. 1 picks was the “best (the Wolves are) going to get,” Steve Bulpett of the Boston Herald reported Wednesday that the Celtics’ offer “isn’t nearly the best the Timberwolves have received — or expect to receive — for their All-Star forward.”
The Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors have made better offers, according to the Herald, and the Wolves apparently believe they can get a talent with their own pick at No. 13 comparable to what they could get with the Celtics’ pick at No. 6.
“At present, however, what the Celtics have to offer isn’t getting it done,” Bulpett writes. “According to a source, the first round picks they own from the Nets are not seen as being of overwhelming value, and, where the Celts had an Al Jefferson to offer Minnesota for Kevin Garnett (seven) years ago, neither Jared Sullinger nor Kelly Olynyk rises to that level in the Wolves’ eyes this time around.”
While this latest report throws cold water on Celtics fans, it doesn’t douse the flames entirely. Remember, circumstances change constantly throughout the pre-draft days of June and the free agency period of July. If this sounds like discouraging news, just wait a day or so.
