Grady Sizemore might find a new home before long.
Sizemore, who officially cleared release waivers and became a free agent Friday, already has drawn interest from the Philadelphia Phillies, among others, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo reports there already is “lots” of interest in Sizemore, who was designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
Sizemore cracked the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster after a strong spring training. The 31-year-old outfielder got off to a hot start but soon fell back down to earth. Sizemore, who missed all of 2012 and 2013 with injuries, hit .216 with two homers, 15 RBIs and a .288 on-base percentage in 52 games with Boston before being released.
Sizemore certainly looked like a player who missed a substantial amount of time, although it’s possible he could improve upon getting more at-bats with another organization. It’s hard to imagine Sizemore returning to the All-Star level he played at while with the Cleveland Indians, but he represents a low-risk option on the open market.
Cafardo notes that it’s unlikely Sizemore would return to the Red Sox on an assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket.
