The Boston Red Sox were looking to have outfielder Shane Victorino and third baseman Will Middlebrooks back on the 25-man roster soon, but that likely will not be the case.
Both were shut down from baseball activities during their rehabs with Triple-A Pawtucket. Middlebrooks, who broke his right index finger May 10, was scratched Monday with swelling in the finger. Victorino was placed on the disabled list May 24 with a strained right hamstring and back soreness, and his back is keeping him out with the PawSox.
Top prospect Mookie Betts has been playing right field in Pawtucket in Victorino’s absence.
