The Boston Red Sox had a golden opportunity against the Oakland A’s on Friday night.
Oakland put a pitcher new to its starting rotation on the mound — one the A’s purchased for $1 from the Milwaukee Brewers, no less — in Brad Mills, and if the Red Sox could get to him early, then they surely would be successful.
But they didn’t.
A beautiful diving catch from outfielder Craig Gentry put an abrupt end to a second-inning Red Sox rally, and they just couldn’t do any more from there. The A’s eventually won 4-3.
