2014 FIFA World CupThe 2014 FIFA World Cup is finally underway.

The eyes of the world turned to Sao Paulo, as host nation Brazil kicked off the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Croatia.

The opening game and first day of the 2014 World Cup had all the things we’ve come to expect from the world’s biggest sporting event: colors, controversy and, of course, goals.

There are still 63 games to come, and we’re wondering aloud if history will remember Brazil 2014 as the best-ever World Cup or, as Brazil President Dilma Rousseff called it in January: “Copa das Copas (loosely translated as the “World Cup of World Cups”).

Brazil is soccer’s spiritual home, and one of the sport’s main nicknames — “The Beautiful Game” — was coined here.

It’s hard to determine objectively where a World Cup ranks against those in the past, but some stand out more than others. Superstar players and great teams shine, and the tournament always creates heroes and villains.

We’ll ask a “question of the day,” during the 2014 World Cup. Here’s a good place to start.
