Major League Baseball teams have a little over two weeks to decide if they will become buyers or sellers at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
Even if the Boston Red Sox fall out of the American League East and wild-card playoff races, general manager Ben Cherington said his team won’t become a “true seller.”
“If we can’t close that gap, we have to be honest with ourselves,” Cherington said Tuesday on NESN’s “Red Sox Gameday Live.” “At some point, we may need to be realistic and focus on helping the 2015 team. We are not at that point yet.
“We will never be a true ‘seller’ looking for the future,” Cherington added. “For us, it would be about reloading for the very next year.”
The Red Sox began Tuesday’s play 10 games behind the division-leading Baltimore Orioles with a record of 39-50. The defending World Series champions also are 10 games behind the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners for the AL’s two wild-card playoff spots.
The Red Sox have a chance to make up some ground with their final six games before the All-Star break against weak competition (three against the White Sox, three against the Houston Astros).
