FOXBORO, Mass. — Brandon Browner has no intention to change his style of play despite an emphasis from officials on calling illegal contact and defensive holding penalties during the 2014 NFL season.
Browner, at 6-foot-4 and 221 pounds, is one of the most physical cornerbacks in the league. He excels by maintaining contact with receivers down the field and by redirecting them at the line in press coverage.
“I’m gonna force them to make the call,” Browner said Saturday after New England Patriots training camp at Gillette Stadium. “I’m not gonna change my game. I’m gonna stay as aggressive as possible.”
Browner said he’ll wait for approval from Patriots head coach Bill Belichick before he changes his style of play.
The league also is looking to emphasize calling offensive pass interference.
“They also changed some rules where they’ll be watching them guy as far as pushing off, so I think it goes both ways, you know,” Browner said. “I don’t think the game will change too much.”
Belichick said he won’t know how to coach players on the new emphasis until calls start being made during the regular season.
“We’re trying to play within the rules but now they’re saying, ‘We’re going to emphasize the rule differently.’ Well, I don’t really know what that means,” Belichick said Friday. “I think you definitely have to get to the preseason or in some cases, the regular season, to see how that’s going to be.”
