Washington Nationals slugger Bryce Harper is actually a big softie at heart.
Well, at least according to ESPN’s latest “This Is SportsCenter” commercial that debuted Thursday. In the 30-second spot, the intensely competitive, bat-breaking outfielder reveals how his signature smeared eye black came to be.
The commercial begins with the 21-year-old watching “Field of Dreams” alongside “SportsCenter” anchor Hannah Storm. Like any human beings with a heart, the two shed some tears while watching the classic flick, with Storm’s mascara running and Harper’s eye black doing the same.
Harper has to excuse himself, telling Storm that he needs to call his dad — a natural reaction — when he runs into John Anderson and Bram Weinstein in the hallway, who comment on how “tough” and “scary” he looks with his streaky eye black.
