C.C SabathiaNew York Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia will undergo season-ending knee surgery on July 23, general manager Brian Cashman announced Friday.

While Sabathia will not have micro-fracture surgery on his right knee like many speculated he would need, he will have a procedure to clean out his knee. The team hopes the 33-year-old will be ready to go for spring training.

“He’ll get it cleaned up. Obviously it will end his season and hopefully next year is a different story,” Cashman said, via USA TODAY Sports.

Sabathia, who hasn’t pitched since May 11, was 3-4 with a 5.28 ERA in eight starts this season.

This is just the latest blow to the Yankees’ pitching staff, who has seen four of its starters land on the disabled list this season. New York has already lost Ivan Nova for the season while Michael Pineda and Masahiro Tanaka are both on the DL, not expected to return until August at the earliest.
